We reached out to Caitlin for her morning rituals: the practices she incorporates into her day, and why they’re important to her.
Ritual one: Meditation
Meditation is my daily non-negotiable and morning is my fav time to get a sit done! Meditating first thing allows you to set the psychological and emotional tone for your day, and helps to prevent reactivity, stress, anxiety and overwhelm from hijacking your vibe. When you meditate in the morn, you establish yourself in the calm and stable centre of sovereignty and set out into your day with solid footing, a map of self-awareness, and a compass with the needle pointing towards your intentions. When the time comes to step out into the world, you’ll find that you aren’t easily triggered or pushed and pulled by whatever comes your way. Because when you meditate, you choose your vibe.
Not only that, but meditation also imbues your waking hours with fierce focus, enhanced productivity and creativity, and undoubtedly upgrades the quality of your presence.
Ritual two: Gratitude
Post meditation, I break out my journal and write down three things I’m grateful for from the last 24 hours. It’s a simple practice that packs a positive punch!
A regular gratitude practice can be an effective way to develop a positive mindset, or what Harvard happiness expert Shawn Actor calls “the happiness advantage.”
Here’s why it works. A gratitude ritual retrains your attention and broadens your perspective to include the positive. It helps you to notice the things you might otherwise “see-through.” The invisible goodness, the invisible acts of kindness, the invisible relationships. Those positive aspects of life that are so easily overlooked by our critical perspective. In short, a gratitude practice helps us pay attention to the positive.
Ritual three:. Intention Setting
While my journal is out, I set an intention for my day.
Setting an intention for your day is a powerful way to support your goals.
In The Upanisads (an ancient Vedic text), it is written “As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”
That’s some ancient advice that still holds true! Let me break it down: your intention is the link between your desires (dreams + goals) and your actions (the force of your will + the deeds you do).
You with me? When you set an intention based on your desire, dream or goal, it guides you to act in alignment with the desire, dream or goal. In this way, setting an intention first thing can chart your course for the day and act like a compass, steering your toward the next right step on the path toward your goal.
Put another way, setting an intention is a way to generate your state. It puts the focus on how aligning yourself with your desire or goal feels. Which makes achieving them a whole lot more likely.
When setting an intention, I like to keep it short and sweet and jot down a handful of words or an affirmative phrase to guide my way for the day. This makes it simpler to set intentions and easier to check in with them throughout the day, guiding you toward your dreams and goals.
