It’s that time of year again, and to save you the effort, we’ve put together a round-up of our favourite sustainable swimwear brands of 2021. At the start of last summer, we put together a round-up of our six favourite Aussie swimwear brands making sustainable swimwear from regenerated fabric, and since that piece has been published, we’ve discovered so many more. With a focus on inclusivity, we’ve chosen swimwear ranges for varying lifestyles and aesthetics: from delicate floral bikinis to durable, practical surf suits. The common theme is the brands’ commitment to empowering women and protecting the planet in the process.
Designed and produced on Gadigal land, GEORGI SWIMMS is the brand that inspired this year’s round-up: a TCS partner that’s really leading the way when it comes to sustainable swimwear. The team of diverse, super talented women behind GEORGI SWIMMS have taken inspiration from their travels around the world to design a range of ultra feminine swimwear that doesn’t cost the planet, and only enhances the lives of the people who inhabit it. Made from Econyl® (the 100% regenerative nylon fabric made from recycled fishing nets, plastic bottles and other ocean waste) at the GEORGI SWIMMS’ HQ in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, each piece is tested for durability to ensure it lasts summer after summer, and then packaged in 100% compostable packaging and posted to your door. Through their ongoing partnerships with environmental NGO’s Greening Australia and SeaBin Project as well as global aid charity CARE , the GEORGI SWIMMS team consistently embody their mission statement to “value ourselves, value each other and value the planet”. As a gift to the TCS community, the team at GEORGI SWIMMS are offering 20% at checkout, with the code TCS20.
Inspired by the Australian coastline, and days spent dropping in and out of the ocean, Hakea makes clean, timeless and versatile swim and surf-wear for women who live fully and only buy items that they love, to last. The limited release collections are designed in Australia and ethically made at a small production house in Bali, with Hakea’s founder overseeing every stage of the design and production process. The Econyl swim and surf suits are sent from Bali to Hakea HQ in biodegradable cassava root bags and cardboard boxes, then sent on to you in a re-usable calico bag packaged in a 100% biodegradable and compostable corn starch postage satchel. As a demonstration of the brand’s reverence for our natural world, Hakea is a partner of 1% of the Planet: donating 1% of all profits to environmental preservation organisations.
More than a brand: Atmosea is a supportive collective of women, dedicated to empowering other female-identifying humans to embrace life, in and out of the ocean. Along with their range of colourful, high function wetsuits (made from Japanese Yamamoto chloroprene rubber, a natural, limestone-derived alternative to chemical neoprene), Atmosea offers a range of similarly playful-yet-functional Econyl swimsuits. As well as promoting the physical, social and emotional wellbeing through their comfortable, easy-to-wear clothing, wetsuits and swimwear, community events and empowering content, Atmosea promotes the wellbeing of the planet through their partnership with 1% for the Planet.
Charlie Mae swim is another Byron based brand, making super sexy swimwear that’s gentle on the earth. The range of high quality, ultra durable textured swimwear is made from a recycled fabric unique to Charlie Mae: a regenerated nylon made from pre and post consumer waste. Their printed range is made from Vita PL, a recycled polyester fabric made from pre and post industrial waste. Charlie Mae bikinis and one-piece swimsuits are designed in Byron Bay and made at a BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) approved production house, which means fair conditions are guaranteed, and the Charlie Mae team also ensure that the production house continues to meet the conditions of their global recycling certification.
Inspired by sunshine, the pretty, playful designs from Burrows & Co are made from Vita Lycra (a sustainable Econyl blend) and packaged in biodegradable packaging. As well as making sustainable swimwear and perfectly holiday-appropriate clothing, Burrows & Co makes matching collars for your canine companions, with a portion of the sale of each collar going towards improving the wellbeing and living conditions of Bali street dogs.
The dreamy, delicately feminine swimwear from Zazi Swim is designed by a team of four sisters, who founded the brand in 2019 with the intention of creating swimwear that turns head but doesn’t cost the earth. The Econyl designs are packaged in recyclable and biodegradable packaging, and for every purchase made, the Zazi Swim team plant a tree.
