Next Of Kin Handmade

Please give us your elevator pitch:

We are a mother-daughter duo with a handmade pottery label that exists to spread messages of slowing down, appreciating the little things and creating your own little moments of beauty within the often-overlooked mundane activities of daily life, like your morning coffee.

What problem is your business solving?

We offer a moment of pause, a chance to exhale, and an invitation to think more clearly and consciously about your purchase decisions, in a society that almost screams at you to buy and do more, more, more. A few years ago, when we started Next Of Kin (and really still to this day depending on where you look), the concept of conscious consumerism was only just beginning to whisper into the noise of our modern culture. Mum has been hand-making ceramics for over 30 years, but we launched the Next Of Kin brand into the world in 2016 with the intention of playing a role in the slow-down and shop-mindfully culture.

Tell us three unique things about your business:

1. Our business is born from love and run by an equally passionate/possibly slightly crazy mother and daughter team who have not lived in the same city for over 6 years

2. Our studio is based in Townsville, North Queensland, where Fiona handcrafts every single piece in between being involved in many other weird and wonderful community art projects

3. We recently sat down together and wrote a list of all the key moments that Next Of Kin has experienced in our almost-four years of working together and it was really the most touching experience to look back on, when we started it was just this tiny, little idea and even though we are small, it really does feel like we have been able to touch the minds, hearts and lives of so many people of the years and we are so grateful to every single one of them for opening to our message and our little handmade mugs!

What can attendees expect to see from you at TCS?

A collection of beautiful and lovingly hand-crafted ceramic wares and a gentle invitation to slow down and create beauty and ritual in your everyday.

Can you tell us a little about your background and where the inspiration came from for your business?

Well, Mum (Fiona), has been an avid and passionate potter for over 30 years now, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics. I (Suzanne) grew up only eating and drinking from mum’s handmade ceramics.

In 2014, I moved to Sydney to pursue a career in Graphic Design and it was during my first couple of years living in Sydney that we had the idea to actually create a pottery ‘brand’ together, through which we could infuse and communicate a larger ethos of slowing down, appreciating handmade, and encouraging conscious and sustainable consumerism, all things that we are very passionate about. I was working in the fashion industry at the time and was disenchanted by the fast-paced, excessively wasteful consumer culture that is woven through the industry, while also simultaneously inspired by the creativity of some labels and the way that they were able to use their product and voice to share positive messages.

So I guess that’s the short story of how Next Of Kin was born and how mum and I came to start working together to build the business!
