Outback Tails

Founded by Jessica Knight and proudly Australian-owned and run, Outback Tails makes quality, sustainable accessories for the furry friends in your life. From the hardworking healers mustering cattle in rural Australia, to the pampered pooches in urban townhouses, Jessica and her team wholeheartedly believes that dogs (and indeed, all pets) are an essential part of the collective human story.

The Outback Tails range includes collars, toys, leads, beds and even ceramic bowls for food and water. The brand’s defining trait, however, is that their colourful and contemporary motifs are developed from indigenous paintings by artists, Pauline Napangardi Gallagher and Ursula Napangardi Hudson. Both Pauline and Ursula are part of the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in the Central Desert and proudly tell stories of Jukurrpa (The Dreaming) through their artwork.

The team behind Outback Tails is passionate about giving back. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of their products goes back to benefit the artists from Warlukurlangu directly, ensuring the continuation of this positive partnership. They also donate a percentage of profits from their gorgeous animal toys to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, an organisation committed to saving native Australian animal habitats from destruction. Win, win!

Can you tell us a little about your background and where the inspiration came from for your business?

The inspiration for Outback Tails came from my love of indigenous art and my passion for Australia’s native bush. I wanted to create a line of pet homewares that reflected that passion after 12 years in the industry building my first brand, DOOG, which stands for Dog Owners Outdoor Gear.
