Tell us three unique things about your business:

  1. We bring together a range of beautiful handmade ceramics and designer planters……not that unique. But we also provide a range of amazing and easy to care for indoor plants and we make sure that any plant our customer purchases fits perfectly inside the ceramic pot they’ve chosen so all they have to do is take it out of the packaging and placed it in it’s new home.
  2. We deliver our products in our fully recyclable plastic free packaging using carbon neutral shipping carriers
  3. We donate $1 from every item sold to an environmental charity of our choice – currently Rainforest Rescue
  4. We supply care instructions with our plants.

Can you tell us a little about your background and where the inspiration came from for your business?

I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the outdoors for as long as I can remember but my love of plants specifically started when my Dad took me to a local orchid grower and bought me some orchids and I’ve been obsessed with plants ever since. My passion for plants led me to study Horticulture at University. After uni I spent a number of years working in the field of environmental restoration, where I was able to use my horticultural knowledge to restore degraded landscapes but I have always collected and grown indoor plants in my spare time.

The inspiration for GreenHouse Co came from an experience I had with my partner a couple of years ago. We’d just moved to the Central Coast and we went for a bit of a road-trip to one of the most reputable local retail nurseries to find an indoor plant and a pot. There were a lot of beautiful indoor plants, so we chose one, a Hoya. Then the challenge of finding a pot began…we eventually found one that was passable but it didn’t have a drainage hole and the plastic pot that the plant was in was way too small for the ceramic pot we’d chosen. No worries (I thought), I’ll just repot it. At this point I should mention, that the idea of having the plant in a plastic pot is so that the plant can be easily lifted out for watering and re-homed when it grows, without damage to a beautiful ceramic pot. So we started looking for a plastic pot that would fit, concealed inside the ceramic pot but we just couldn’t find one, not even one that could be cut down to the right size. So we left to drive half an hour home with a plant that didn’t fit the ceramic pot we couldn’t pot directly into and a 25L bag of potting mix to repot a plant into a 1.5L plastic pot we didn’t have. This got me thinking… what a bloody nightmare. It would be even worse if you had no idea about plants, didn’t know how to repot them, or what potting mix to use. Or worse, you lived in an apartment and had just bought 25L of potting mix to repot one plant only to throw the rest out.

So that led to the idea of providing customers with a choice of beautiful plants and ceramics and taking care of the rest of the hassle – we make sure that the plastic pot the plant comes in fits perfectly in any ceramic pot our customers choose and deliver them to their doorstep so all they have to do is take them out of the box and work out where to put them. We also provide care instructions to ensure they can be successful with their new plants.
