The Other Bag

Picture this: you have walked up and down the aisles of your local grocery store. You have a basket full of green goodness, some scrumptious fresh bread, a carton of eggs and everything else you’ll need for the next few days. You get to the register; your arms weary from carrying the heap of produce your basket. And then it hits you – you have forgotten your reusable bags! Perhaps they’re in the boot of your car, or maybe, still at home on the kitchen bench. You quietly apologise to the people in the queue behind you as you backtrack to the rack of (unattractive) reusable bags and reluctantly select a few so as to get your hoard home in one piece. You promise yourself it will never happen again. But, alas, it probably will.

This is a scenario you probably know all too well. In your effort to remain sustainable and environmentally conscious you have invested in a couple of eco-friendly bags, but you never (ever) remember them! This is when you need The Other Bag in your life. Not only do they make stunning reusable bags, they have also employed some very clever tricks, so you’ll never forget your bags again!

The Other Bag was founded by Abi Staniford and Claire Davey on the shores of Bondi Beach. Both are passionate about protecting the ocean and environment and between them they have a background in fashion design, journalism and business. The brand consists of a range of reusable bags including handy crossbodies to larger totes for groceries, books and more. Their most genius creation, however, is the addition of a silver eyelet on each bag meaning it can be attached to keyrings, other bags or belts so you never forget your reusable bags again.

Each piece in the collection has been designed in Bondi and draws inspiration for its colour palette from the iconic surrounds. Plus, in an effort to join the circular economy, the fabrics the pair have chosen for their designs are made from 100% recycled fishing nets and post-consumer plastic bottles. They are also passionate about giving back, with 1% of sales going to Healthy Seas, an initiative that works to retrieve ghost nets from the ocean floor, in turn, saving the lives of countless marine animals.

Please give us your elevator pitch:

We create ocean-friendly crossbody bags and totes from recycled materials.

What problem is your business solving?

We use waste rescued from the oceans and landfill to make everyday bags.

Tell us three unique things about your business:

  1. Ghost fishing nets rescued from the ocean are regenerated with other nylon waste to make one of our yarns
  2. There are 7.6 plastic bottles in our graphic print totes
  3. We donate 1% of our profits to Healthy Seas, an initiative that organises the rescue of ghost fishing nets from seas and oceans around the world

What can attendees expect to see from you at TCS?

Attendees can see and try out our fantastic first collection of everyday essential crossbody bags and reusable totes!

Can you tell us a little about your background and where the inspiration came from for your business?

Based in Bondi, we are able to see the effects of marine pollution every day. We had a very clear vision of wanting to design a reusable, versatile everyday bag collection that would help rid our environment of pollution and use waste in a constructive way. We found fabrics that use recycled waste and designed our collection with that is versatile and easy to use. We draw our design and colour inspiration from the ocean and environment around us.
